The Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock stands as a grand neoclassical landmark, with its white marble dome and columns evoking timeless elegance. During the holiday season, it transforms into a dazzling beacon of Christmas cheer through its annual lighting display, a tradition dating back to 1938. Now in its 87th year as of 2025, the event—hosted by the Secretary of State—draws crowds for a ceremonial lighting on the steps, complete with live performances, remarks, and a spectacular fireworks finale.
The core of the display features thousands of twinkling Christmas lights strung across the building’s facade, outlining its architectural details in festive red, green, white, and multicolored patterns. Classic holiday motifs dominate: alternating red and green washes that pulse gently, warm white outlines highlighting columns, arches, and the prominent dome, creating a glowing silhouette against the night sky. A large Christmas tree on the front lawn, often called the official state tree, sparkles with hundreds of lights and ornaments, adding a focal point of traditional warmth. “PEACE” lights above the bronze doors, a feature since 1986, shine as a hopeful message amid the glow.
What elevates the experience beyond standard string lights is the integration of dynamic elements, including synchronized light shows choreographed to music. The facade comes alive with sequenced patterns—rippling waves of color, cascading snowflakes in light form, bursts mimicking fireworks in sync with the real display, and festive animations that sweep across the columns and pediment.
The video projection mapping is done using Resolume.
The Grand Ceremony
Regarding video projection using Resolume (a powerful VJ software for real-time video mixing and mapping), while the primary display relies on extensive LED or traditional holiday lighting fixtures for broad coverage, projection mapping techniques enhance certain years or segments. High-lumen projectors cast mapped video content onto the building’s surfaces, turning the stone into a canvas for animated holiday scenes: swirling snowstorms, dancing reindeer, falling gifts, or abstract geometric holiday patterns that align perfectly with the architecture. Resolume excels here by allowing precise warping and blending of multiple projectors to avoid distortion on the irregular facade, layering video loops with color effects, and syncing everything to holiday soundtracks for immersive shows. This creates moments where the building appears to breathe—windows “light up” with virtual candles, ornaments “grow” on virtual trees, or the dome spins with starry effects—blending physical lights with digital magic for a mesmerizing, larger-than-life spectacle.
Closing…
At night, the overall effect is enchanting: the Capitol glows like a giant holiday card, warm and inviting, with lights reflecting off the grounds and drawing families to stroll, take photos, and feel the season’s joy. Inside, additional decorations complement the exterior, but it’s the illuminated exterior—combining timeless strings, choreographed sequences, and occasional projected video artistry—that makes it a beloved Little Rock tradition, radiating hope and community spirit through December and into the New Year.
